Pick Swedish to rest: long, smooth strokes at a light to medium pressure over the whole body. Pick Deep Tissue for a tight back, neck or hips: slower, firmer pressure. At Blue Bay Massage Spa in Winter Park, both cost $60 for 30 minutes or $80 for 60.
What Swedish is like
Swedish feels smooth and even. Long strokes at a light to medium pressure warm the whole body.
It does not dig into knots, which makes it a natural first massage. See our Swedish Massage page.
What deep tissue is like
Deep tissue feels slow and firm. Your therapist works into the back, shoulders, neck and hips.
It should feel strong, never sharp. Say so, and the pressure eases. See our Deep Tissue Massage page.

Making the choice
Go by your goal. To unwind, choose Swedish. To work on tight muscles, choose Deep Tissue.
People with a stiff back from desk work or a long drive often pick Deep Tissue. People who simply want to switch off pick Swedish or Relaxation.
Too firm? Here is the sign
If you tense up or hold your breath, the pressure is too much. Good pressure feels strong while you breathe easily.
Tell your therapist right away, and they change it.
Somewhere in between
You can ask for a mix: an easy pace overall, with firmer work on one or two spots.
If those spots are knots in the neck, Muscle Tension or Shiatsu may be the better fit.
